For our January Special Event Dive Trip Our Dive Team Arranged a Special Night Dive Trip Down to Near the by Samae san Islands, Our Dive Site Destination, Shark Fin Rock!

Shark Fin Rock, or Hin Lak Bat as it is is named locally in Thai, is by far one of the nicest most vibrant coral reef habitats to dive in pattaya.

Just a short boat trip from the Samae san pier heading around the north side of Koh Samae San Island you will soon see a small rocky islet in the distance that almost resembles a shark fin in shape. This is Hin Lak Bat and where it get its famous name from. Although at glance, Shark Fin Rock seems to be a very small dive site, This is only from the surface. Once you descend down below the surface, you will quickly realise that there is a much, much large coral reef dive site down below that what you first thought.

Hin Lak Bat, One Of The Top 5 Pattaya Dive Sites!

Hin Lak Bat is certainly one of the top 5 dive spots to scuba dive in Pattaya. Even after exploring this dive site over a number of dives and getting to know the general lay out of the rocks, sandy areas and drop offs, you can still find yourself wandering into new areas at points as the reef leads to other formations and smaller out crops and min reefs not apparent from the surface topography. We had two amazing dives here on this special dive in Pattaya.

The Dive Plan

First dip was our dusk dive, off the the north western side of Shark fin rock. Although at the point of arrival the current was present from the surface observations, the northside was still and calm, we descended close to the reef and main rock formations into a shallow area with a wall like drop downs meeting the bottom at about 14m deep. The viz was good and we could see stag horns corals,  brain corals, huge red barrel sponges and anemones all covering the rocks structures and wall as we followed the coral line along. As we progressed down deeper to the deeper reef section at about 18m, the ambient light was good enough to see but our flashlights were already taking over, making the red and purples on the reef pop out. We passed many anemones with magnificent shrimp inside, and one or two blue spot stings rays before encountering some large puffers and morays on the turn point which were already out and about looking for that night time feed. The light levels dropped off towards the end of the dive and we entered night mode. We have just enough time to see the sparkling eyes of the Durban Dancer Shrimp begin to sparkle in our flashlights as they began to run out from under the daytime hiding holes just before it was time to ascend.

After a Short surface Interval it was time to descend again, for our Night Dive Trip main attraction! This time on the South eastern side of Hin Lak Bat,with it’s 16m vertical wall almost breaking the surface. We worked our way around towards the north eastern side which has a large sand bank sliding down to 25m on the east, we leveled off at 18m and navigated the rocky underwater landscape seeking out large Blue Spotted Sting Rays in full on hunt mode. We also found one of the largest hermit crabs we’ve seen and he was pretty friendly, not shy at all. The colour and variety of coral and marine life on this dive site is just simply fantastic at night and easy to see why this is coined to be one best spots to dive in Pattaya!
